Types of Knots

• The Arbor knot is one of the simplest, most reliable and most popular knots used by fishermen. Pass the fishing line around the reel and then take the free end and tie an overhand knot. Repeat the process in order to make a second knot, which will secure your line to the reel. You should use this knot every time you go fishing. You can feel secure that you will not lose your lure or your line.
  
  This Nail knot is the knot of choice when you want to use lines of differing widths. You will want to use a stronger and wider line when you are going after bigger fish or fly-fishing. In order to tie a proper nail knot, you will need a hollow tube. Take your thicker line and wrap it six times around the tube and the original line, which will be held against one another. After making six loops, pass the remaining end of the thicker line through the tube and pull it taut. This will be secure and help you bring in fish of 30 lbs. or more.
  
  The Clinch knot can be used with all large fish or strong fish that are regarded as good fighters. Take the end of the fishing line and pass it through the eye of your hook. Make at least four turns from the end nearest the hook going back toward the fishing reel. Then after the last turn, pass it back through the hole and then pull it through the loop. This will make your line strong and secure.
  
  

Preparing the Fishing Line

• When you tie your fishing knots, you should do it with a lubricated line. You want to pull all knots as tight as possible, and the best thing to do is to make sure the line is wet. Most anglers will lubricate the line with saliva. It's quick and effective. Vegetable oil is also effective, and some fishermen will bring some in their tackle box to make sure their knots are smooth and well-tied.
  
  

Type of Line

• Use a monofilament line when you are tying knots in fishing line. Monofilament line is strong, clear and made of a single fiber. When monofilament line is manufactured, polymer pellets are melted and the residue is pushed through fine openings to form the line. This assures the line will not break---even when tying intricate knots.
