Conservation Facts on Ohio Fishing
- The Ohio DNR monitors fish living in the Lake Erie system closely for the presence of an array of toxins, most notably heavy metals and contaminants that cause disease. Fish are caught and sampled while test results are forwarded to the EPA and made available to anglers.
- Ohio's rivers are a significant point of interest for the ODNR and other conservation groups. The Ohio River, for example, has been known to house invasive species such as the zebra mussel and other parasites, which have been known to endanger native fish. Fish are monitored closely in Ohio's rivers and ballast water is tested thoroughly for the presence of harmful species.
- The Ohio DNR provides updated information about how owners and local government agencies can properly manage small lakes and ponds. Information about stocking, controlling fish population and invasive species are readily available.
