Easy Exterior Home Improvements for December

12
There are many ways you can start your landscaping and hardscaping projects yourself. For one, you can begin by adding focal points. These are areas that draw the eye. Think in terms of stone walls and gazebos for focal point ideas. Some hardscaping jobs you should definitely consider starting in the winter are: gazebos, Brick or stone walls, privacy fencing, terraces, pathways, walkways, driveway paving, and outdoor fireplaces

And even if you don't want to build those features right away, it would certainly not hurt to begin planning what your yard will look like at every point of the year in December or January. Have you always wanted a pond, pathway, or gazebo in your yard? Now is the time to begin envisioning and planning your garden landscaping, planting projects, or overall landscaping.

Another great idea to get started in the winter is hardscaping projects for your backyard.  Even though granite is mostly used in kitchens and bathroom for granite countertops and shower surrounds, granite is taking a step out of the house to be used for hardscapes. Granite is an excellent choice for your outdoor hardscaping because it's a nonporous material that will stand up to Mother Nature's elements.

Planning your backyard landscaping and front yard landscaping projects in the winter is also a great idea for budget reasons.  By starting in the fall or winter, you are guaranteed to score the very best prices on the bushes and trees to be placed in your yard. Many landscapers and masonry contractors have less busy schedules than they do in summer. Because of that, landscaping is cheaper in the winter for some contracting companies. Many home remodeling contractors will be more willing to give you low pricing for landscaping jobs. Not only that, but you won't lose valuable time from your backyard like you would in the summer when you want to host barbecues or have your children play in the outdoors.

While removing fallen leaves, you can also clean out flower beds and also get a head start on planting. Consider planting bare-root trees and roses.  It's also very important to begin maintaining your lawn in the winter namely by keeping your grass short. By mowing your lawn short, you will reduce the risk of having snow mold occur. If  your do not cut grass, it will lay over on itself under the pressure of snow. Snow mold could pose a serious risk to early spring lawns. Consider bringing in snow removers to completely avoid this problem altogether.

Of course the last thought on many homeowners minds in the dead of December is yard work. After all, who wants to prune scraggly winter weeds in the freezing cold?  Why can't you just leave it waiting until April?

In actuality, winter months are the best time to take on landscaping projects. At this very moment, your lawn probably has last summer's brown spots and crab grass. Don't let that carry over into spring.

Improving your home's landscaping or hardscaping will improve your overall satisfaction with your place of residence. Even without spring's flowers all in bloom, you should be able to look out at your backyard and see beauty.
