How to Weave a Construction Paper Basket
- 1). Choose the colors you would like to make your construction paper basket. If you would like to make a basket of just one color, then you need three sheets of construction paper. If you wish to make a basket of more than one color, then make sure you get at least one sheet of construction paper in that color.
- 2). Cut the paper lengthwise into 27 3/4-inch wide strips. If you have a paper cutter, then you can use that to cut the paper into strips. If you do not have a paper cutter, then use a ruler and a pencil to mark the top and the bottom of the paper every 3/4 inch. Connect the marks at the bottom and top of the paper. Use the ruler to draw straight lines, then cut along those lines with scissors.
- 3). Fold seven strips of paper in half, then lay them open side by side on the table. If you wish to make a multicolored basket, then make sure you lay different colored strips of construction paper next to each other.
- 4). Weave a strip across the center of all the seven strips. Pass the paper over, under, over, under until you reach the end of the last strip of paper. Pull the strip so that strip extends evenly on either side of the seven vertical strips of paper. Weave a second piece of paper across the seven strips of paper, going under, over, under, over, making sure that the paper extends evenly on either side of the seven strips. Do this with five more strips. When you are finished, you will have a cross shape, consisting of seven strips on the top and bottom of the cross and seven strips on the cross pieces. Only the middle should be woven.
- 5). Take 10 more strips of paper and cut them in half. Weave each short piece on the unwoven ends of the cross. When you are finished, the entire cross should be woven.
- 6). Fold four of the short strips in half lengthwise. Press them flat on the table and put glue on the inside of the paper. Put one of the folded papers over the end of the arm, and press it closed. Repeat this step for all of the remaining arms. Fold up each of the arms until you have a perfect square in the center which will be the bottom of the basket.
- 7). Fold two long strips of paper in half lengthwise, then fold them in half again. Open the paper and put glue on the inside. Line up the center fold with the corners and put the folded paper over the edges, holding two of the sides up and together. Repeat this step with the other two sides.
- 8). Make a handle by gluing a long strip on the inside of the basket.
