Bedroom Interior Decorating Ideas

    Furniture

    • Rearranging your existing furniture can give your bedroom an easy facelift and fulfill your need to change your décor. When it comes to the layout, be sure to account for windows and remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Position your bed in a way that does not leave you blinded by the sun as soon as you wake up. Adding a chair to an empty corner or placing a bench at the foot of the bed will also enhance the appeal.

    Windows

    • Bedroom windows are usually last in line for window treatments because most people focus on décor in the parts of their home guests will see. Adding curtains and drapes that coordinate with the bedding or color scheme in the room is another easy way to transform your space. You can also experiment with wood or bamboo blinds for a natural and earthy approach.

    Floors

    • Changing the flooring in a room doesn't have to be as daunting as it sounds. If your bedroom has a hard floor such as tile or wood, an area rug can quickly change the look of the whole room. Add carpet padding under the rug for a more luxurious and plush look. If your bedroom has carpet, check to see what the sub-floors are made of. Many older homes have natural hardwood or terrazzo flooring underneath the carpet. Removing the carpet and refinishing the original floors can make for a weekend project that will restore natural beauty to your bedroom.

    Expert Advice

    • Karen Chien, interior designer and owner of Cheeky Living in Jersey City, N. J., offers some expert tips for a fast and affordable bedroom makeover. Her first suggestion is to get rid of the clutter. Chien says, "Bedrooms are a place for relaxation and repose. This can't be achieved with stacks of junk mail and magazines, dirty laundry, cotton swabs and that Swedish exercise ball you never use scattered about. Get organized and clear out items you don't use regularly." When it comes to decorating Chien suggests you start with the bed, saying, "The bed is often the focal point of a boudoir in both residential and hospitality settings. An easy and inexpensive way to create a fresh look is to get great sheets, linens and other soft goods like pillows and throws that have both a visual and tactile appeal. Using these accessories as touch points will help you develop a color palette for the room." And with the color palette in mind, Chien adds, "A little paint goes a long way and this is particularly true in a bedroom where the right hue can re-energize a space. If you are worried about too great a design commitment, start with an accent wall first."
