Rose of Sharon Planting Zones
- Rose of Sharon is most hardy in zones 5 through 9. These zones are found on the USDA hardiness zone map, and vary based on sea level, average temperature and humidity in any given region. Rose of Sharon performs best in areas with full sun and evening shade. Soil conditions should be moist but not allowed to grow soggy, as the National Gardening Association explains. The rose of Sharon bush does well in places where it can branch out and grow to the very typical 12-foot height and 8-foot width.
Places where rose of Sharon will perform best include Memphis, Tennessee; Atlanta; Dallas; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. These major cities fall inside zones 5 through 7; their surrounding areas would also be a good place to grow rose of Sharon. Because of humidity and sea level factors, the zone hardiness map from the USDA is a good reference tool to guide you while planting. There is no straight, clean line for where one zone begins and another ends. - Rose of Sharon only performs at its best when planted in zones 5 through 9. If you live outside of these zones, you may keep your rose of Sharon in a container and bring it indoors during the winter if you like. Pruning the bush back to a good height is more desirable for container growing; 6 to 8 feet should be your maximum goal. The rose of Sharon likes constant warmth but does tolerate a winter with typical temperatures around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. This is due to the dormancy period the rose of Sharon will undergo during the winter months.
