The Avira Uninstall Didn't Work
- The standard uninstall procedure for Windows applications may be interrupted by other programs and processes. If the uninstall process has failed, reboot your PC in safe mode by tapping F8 as the computer starts up and selecting safe mode from the menu that appears. Safe mode will minimize the chance of third-party applications and processes interfering with the uninstall procedure. From within safe mode, visit the Programs and Features section of Control Panel, where you will find a full list of your installed software. Choose the Avira product from the list, and click "Uninstall." Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall process.
- If the uninstall routine fails in safe mode, a more in-depth procedure may be required to solve the issue. You will need to manually remove files and folders from the C:\Program Files\Avira folder as well as from the Avira folder in your user data folder (located at C:\ProgramData in Windows 7 and Vista). The Avira Registry Cleaner, a free download from the Avira website, can clean up any outstanding entries in the Windows Registry. For full step-by-step instructions and background information, visit the Support section of the Avira website.
- An alternative troubleshooting method is to use a third-party uninstall application to remove the Avira software from your hard drive. These applications are typically more thorough and detailed than Windows' own uninstall utility. Two freeware options are Revo Uninstaller Free from revouninstaller.com and Simnet Uninstaller from simnetsoftware.com. Consult the documentation supplied with the software for instructions.
- The best resource for finding further help is the official support section of the Avira website at avira.com. Click through to select the type of software you're using (home or business), then run a search, using as much information as you can supply about the problem, including the name of the Avira program you are using. More comprehensive technical support is available if you are using a paid premium Avira product.
