How to Detect Amide Herbicides
- 1). Observe plants growing in the soil for signs of amides. Symptoms of amide herbicides include stunted growth, misshapen shoots and deformed leaves.
- 2). Dig up the soil to look at the grass roots. The amide herbicide naptalam will alter plants so that the roots grow upward instead of downward.
- 3). Take a soil sample from the section of yard that exhibits signs of amide herbicides by digging up a quart of soil. Allow the sample to dry and place it in a plastic sandwich bag.
- 4). Take the sample to your nearest county extension service for a soil analysis. An agent with the county extension service will send the sample to the nearest agricultural university-run soil laboratory. If there are any traces of amide residue in the soil, the soil laboratory will find them.
