How to Get Scratches Off Laminate Countertops
- 1). Remove any objects from the scratched area. Spray a laminate cleaner on the scratch and the immediate surrounding area. Wipe the area dry with a soft cloth.
- 2). Place the edge of a piece of rough-grit sandpaper on the countertop at one side of the scratch. Push down hard on the sandpaper as you drag it across the scratch. Remove the sandpaper from the countertop once you reach the other side of the scratch. Repeat two more times.
- 3). Inspect the scratch to see if the inside edges appear roughened. If so, continue with the next step. If the inside edges do not appear roughened, repeat the step using light-grit sandpaper, as many times as necessary.
- 4). Blow off the area with a burst of compressed air to scatter the laminate dust.
- 5). Apply laminate filler to the end of a plastic putty knife. Place the edge of the knife at one side of the scratch. Push down gently on the knife's edge as you drag it across the scratch. Remove the knife from the countertop once you reach the other side of the scratch. Repeat as needed until the scratch is filled. Let the laminate filler set for the amount of time specified in the instructions.
- 6). Place the edge of the piece of light-grit sandpaper on the countertop at one side of the filled scratch and drag it across the scratch. Remove the sandpaper from the countertop once you reach the other side of the scratch. Repeat until the surface of the scratch is even with the countertop, making the scratch invisible to the eye.
- 7). Blow off the countertop with a burst of compressed air, spray some laminate cleaner and wipe the area dry with a soft cloth.
