Herbs to Help With Memory

6

    Gingko Biloba

    • This is a particularly popular herbal treatment for brain function and health. In Germany and Canada it is used to treat dementia -- a illness characterized by memory loss. This treatment is mostly used with elderly patients with memory loss, but many use it for healthier brain function. Though it is not proven to help those with severe memory loss, such as those with Alzheimer's disease, it can be effective in treating mild to moderate memory disorders.

    Bilberry

    • Bilberries are the German cousin of the American blueberry and are full of healthy antioxidants. According to Ray Sahelian, M.D., tests on lab rats found that bilberry shows signs of preventing memory disorders later in life. However, tests have also shown that though the tests showed bilberry improved short-term memory, there was not a difference in the effects of long-term memory in the rats. These tests also revealed that the flavonoids in these berries also improve learning function.

    Brahmi

    • Brahmi is an Indian herb that is known to have many medicinal uses, including improving several aspects of brain function. According to Isabel Shipard, an herbal expert and author, it works by aiding blood flow and circulation by releasing nitric oxide as well as proteins which nourish each nerve in the brain cells, improving comprehension, memory and co-ordination. It also is known to reduce stress and increase energy which will result in an improvement in memory.

    Rhodiola Rosea

    • Grown in remote areas, such as Siberia, this root has long been used by tribal peoples to improve mental capabilities. According to a Bulgarian medical journal, lab tests have found that rhodiola rosea has shown to reveal signs of memory retention within 24 hours of consumption in lab rats. Lab rats were given 10 days of treatment which marked an improved difference in the long-term memories of the rats. Another study on rhodiola rosea by the Armenian State Medical University showed improvement in several areas of mental performance, including short-term memory.
