Tutorial for Microsoft DirectX
- 1). Determine whether you are running a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system on your computer. This can be done by going into the control panel and looking at the system information, or it can be determined using a handy little program from Microsoft called "Fix It." To locate the program, go to Microsoft Support Center, frequently asked questions and type in the question, "32 or 64 bits?" This will bring up a selectable sentence. After selecting it, scroll down the resultant page until you see the link words "Fix it for me." That link will take you to the download program, which will list for you information about your computer's OS.
- 2). Read the system requirements on the package or computer download screen of any program you plan to load. Make sure your computer system meets all the requirements. DirectX is packaged for 32-bit or for 64-bit systems, and may be included in the game or accessory software you purchase. Games or accessories intended for 64-bit computers may run slowly or even lock up on a 32-bit system. Loading a game with an older version of DirectX on the disc than the one currently installed on your computer may cause the older version of DirectX to replace the newer one.
- 3). Download or install your program if your computer meets the system requirements. This will include checking the version of DirectX currently on your computer. Missing or out-of-date software can cause problems with installation and function of any program, including the DirectX component. As the software installs, you may be prompted to accept or decline DirectX. Pay close attention to the version of DirectX the program wants to install. Older games may attempt to load a version of DirectX that is less current than the one you are running.
- 4). Download a current version of DirectX if you find that after installing older software, programs which formerly functioned now perform poorly, or if your computer does not have DirectX and you need it for your software to work correctly. This may be done by going to the Microsoft Web page or by going to other software suppliers. Read and follow the directions on the vendor website carefully. Select the software intended for your type of computer.
- 5). Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation of Microsoft DirectX. Updates should be automatic, but if you have updates turned off or they are blocked by security measures, periodically check the program to make sure you have the most current version of DirectX. This will ensure that your programs will run smoothly, and you will have the newest fixes for known security problems.
