Natural Holiday Allergy Relief Tips

16
The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the natural remedies available for allergies. Here is their report:

When the body comes into contact with allergens, it releases histamine, a chemical which generates symptoms like itchy and watery eyes, coughing and a runny nose.

Sometimes a cold generates the same symptoms, but a cold will generally last no more than ten days.

Allergy symptoms however, can last as long as allergens are present.

Here are some causes of fall and winter allergies and specific remedies to keep symptoms at bay:

Mold - grows in damp, humid areas and is more prevalent in basements, kitchens and bathrooms.  As airborne mold spores can cause allergy responses, here are some ways to reduce or eliminate mold.
  • Use a dehumidifier if needed to keep indoor air less than 50 percent humidity
  • Immediately attend to plumbing problems.
  • Dispose of shower curtains, rugs or any other household items that contain mold.
  • To control moisture on walls and ceilings, use exhaust fans while showering.
  • To clean accumulated mold, turn on an exhaust fan if available. Wear rubber gloves and an inexpensive filtration mask, and wipe away mold with a cloth, water and a five percent bleach solution.

Pet dander - is more pronounced during colder months as many animals spend more time indoors.  Pet dander from furniture and in the air can trigger allergy symptoms.  Try these solutions to keep symptoms to a minimum.
  • Sweep and vacuum daily.
  • Bathe and brush dogs regularly.
  • Keep pets off furniture to control exposure to dander.

Dust mites - are microscopic bugs that live in carpets, furniture cushions and bedding.  Airborne dust mite particles and droppings can create havoc for those with an allergy to them.  Try these tips for control of dust mites.
  • Purchase mite-resistant pillow and bedding casings.
  • Wash bed linens and pajamas in hot water weekly.
  • Vacuum carpets and furniture regularly with a HEPA-filtered vacuum.
  • Clean vent ducts and replace filters at least four times per year.
  • Keep house as clutter-free and dust-free as possible.

Fragrances - can elicit certain skin reactions and breathing problems in some people with allergies and asthma.  Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, air fresheners and potpourri all have potential for causing these reactions.  Limit the use of these products in your household if you know that you or loved ones are particularly sensitive.

General Tips to Curb Allergies during the Holidays
  • Many people think they may be allergic to Christmas trees.  Consider purchasing an artificial tree as live trees can possess mold and chemicals which may induce allergy symptoms.
  • If you have food allergies, let potential party hosts know in advance of foods that trigger them. Just in case, carry an injection of epinephrine (with physicians approval) or an OTC like Allerest with you to any holiday party you attend.
  • If your host has pets and you have an allergy, again, carry an over-the-counter medication with you and take it as needed.
  • Bring your own allergen-resistant bedding to hotels and the homes of friends and relatives.
