How to Change Spark Plugs in Your Car

      This is the distributor cap, the place where the spark plug wires start.

      Open the hood of your car and locate the distributor cap. This will be on top of the engine and will b where all of the spark plug wires come out of.

    • 2). Remove only one spark plug wire from the distributor cap and follow it down to the spark plug in the engine.

      Aspark plug socket, extension, and a rachet.

      Remove the old spark plug from the engine using a spark plug socket.

      Gap the new spark plug. The gap for your engine can be found out from your local auto parts dealer. Insert the gapper into the spark plug and move it to the proper distance marked on the gapper.

      A new gapped spark plug is ready to go in.

      Replace the old spark plug with the new one. Tighten the spark plug but do not tighten it to the point of stripping out the threads.

    • 6). Replace the old spark plug wire with a new one. Use the old wire to compare to the new ones to make sure you are selecting the proper wire from the new set. Connect one end of the wire to the spark plug and the other end to the distributor cap.

    • 7). Repeat from step 2 above for each of the spark plugs in your engine.
