Can You Paint a Plastered Pool?

22

    Types of Paints

    • In order to paint a plaster surface, the proper paint needs to be selected. There are several types of paints to choose from including epoxy, acrylic and rubber-based. Epoxy paints are by far the most long-lasting, enduring nearly 7 to 10 years. Acrylic paints only last two to three years and are best used in public pools that are repainted every few years. They also can be applied while the surface is still damp. Acrylic paints also retain the ability to be applied on top of both rubber and epoxy paints. Rubber-based paints are not as durable as epoxies but are much cheaper. They usually last around three to five years.

    Conditions

    • Plaster pools can only be painted if the conditions are right, and the surface has been prepared correctly. Any cracks or damage to the plaster will need to be repaired. In order to do this, the pool will have to be drained and then acid-washed with a 50/50 mixture of water and muriatic acid. Make sure that when choosing your paint, you select a paint that will work with the current condition of the pool. If any epoxy paints are present, you cannot use a rubber-based paint or vice versa. Keep in mind that an acrylic paint can be used on any surface.

    Procedure

    • When you are ready to paint the pool, you will want to ensure that the surface has had sufficient time to dry. Make sure that the pool surface is clear of dirt and any loose paint. If the pool is outdoors, you will need to check the forecast for rain. If there is any rain in the forecast, you will want to wait. If the conditions are right, you can begin painting the plaster. Apply the paint with a roller, starting in the deep end and working towards the shallow end. After all the desired coats are applied, you will need to let the paint job cure for five days before refilling. After the cure period passes, you will want to fill the pool all at once with no breaks in between.
