Why It May Make Sense To Pay Extra For A T1 Line

42
Business have many choices today when it comes to internet connectivity. They can go with a T1 Line, business class DSL or they can even go with cable. DSL and Cable are considerably cheaper than a dedicated line, so why are many business owners still decide to go with the more expensive solution.

The answer is simple. If you need reliable internet connectivity with guaranteed quality of service and guaranteed actual useable capacity you really don't have a choice.

A T1 line is also called a dedicated line. It is a virtual point to point connection between you and your service providers data center. You are the only one using that connection. There is no neighbor downloading thousands of songs and videos while you are trying to talk to your business partner overseas using high quality VOIP.

DSL and Cable are shared internet connections. Unlike the dedicated lines you have to share the bandwidth with anybody that is using the internet in your neighborhood at the same time. While that is ok for home use and may even be ok for an office if you are not using the internet for any mission critical applications. It definitely is not acceptable if your business depends on being able to access the intern.

Another great argument for the more costly dedicated solution is reliability. DSL and Cable are in essence consumer companies. They worry about how many people are effected by a service outage and schedule their restoration efforts based on how they can bring back the most people or households in the shortest time. Your business, which is your lively hood and the lifeblood of your employees gets the same attention and priority as restoring cable TV service for your grand ma.

T1 service providers only have business clients. They understand what down time can do to a business and their well trained specialist are doing everything to restore your dedicated line. You are their number one priority and they are able to put considerable resources behind fixing your problems, because they are actually getting paid enough to be able to do so.

Most T1 service providers also offer service guarantees. You may even be able to negotiate penalties and financial incentives for the service provider to bring you back online as fast as they can.

Depending on the use case for your internet connection you may also want to think about if you need fast upload and fast download speeds. DSL typically only provide acceptable speeds for downloads but is painfully slow on uploads. Yes it is true that you can buy DSL products that offer the same performance for uploads and downloads but now you are basically looking at comparable prices too.

So why does it make sense to pay the few extra dollars for a T1 Line? If peace of mind and the assurance of uninterrupted business operations is not enough reason for you, maybe you should also take the above arguments into account. A dedicated line can be a life line for many businesses!
