DIY Driving Round Tubing Into the Ground for a Fence Post
- 1). Position the round tubing on its end at the spot where you want the fence post to go. Have a helper hold the round tubing in place, low to the ground.
- 2). Set a ladder next to the tubing. Carry a manual post driver up the ladder far enough so that you can slide its open end over the top end of the tubing. Before sliding it onto the post, check that your helper’s hands are low enough on the tubing to avoid injury when the driver slides over the post. Climb down the ladder and move it away while your helper continues to hold the tubing steady.
- 3). Stand opposite your helper on the other side of the tubing. Grasp one handle of the manual post driver and have your helper grab the other. In unison, raise the driver up about half the length of the driver shaft. Without letting go of the driver's handle, allow the driver to free-fall down the tubing. When the closed end of the driver hits the top end of the tubing, it will drive the bottom of the tubing into the ground a bit.
- 4). Continue raising and dropping the driver in unison with your helper to drive the tubing farther into the ground. Keep your hands away from the portion of the tubing that will be covered by the post driver to avoid injury.
- 5). Step away from the tubing, from time to time, to make sure the tubing remains vertical. Adjust the tubing, if necessary, to make it stand upright out of the ground.
- 6). Continue driving the tubing into the ground until the portion underground is equal to one-third of the total length of the tubing.
- 7). Drive one or more large galvanized nails next to the base of the tubing with a hammer if there is play in the fence post when you are done. Use a carpenter’s level to make sure the fence post is completely vertical.
