How to Fish With a Wacky Worm
- 1). Choose the correct equipment. A spinning rod that is between 6.5 and 7 feet long and a spinning reel that is spooled with eight- to 10-pound test monofilament line is best.
- 2). Choose the size of straight-tail worm you want to use. The most common sizes range from four to eight inches in length.
- 3). Tie a 1/0 or 2/0 straight-shank hook to the end of the fishing line, depending on the size of worm you use. The smaller hook is good for four- to five-inch worms, while a larger hook is better for larger worms.
- 4). Hook the worm in the middle so there is an even amount of worm on both sides of the hook.
- 5). Cast the wacky worm around shoreline cover, weedlines or boat docks, and let it sink. Keep in mind that it will sink slowly, so do not be in a hurry. After a few seconds, pull the rod tip and reel in some fishing line. Then let the wacky worm sink again.
- 6). Feel for tension. Bass usually do not hit wacky worms hard, and they often hit them while they are falling through the water column. As a result, whenever you feel tension on the line, reel line in and lightly sweep the rod tip. A hard hook set is not necessary because the hook of a wacky worm is exposed and most fish likely will hook themselves.
