How to Remove a 4x4 Tire Hub
- 1). Set the parking brake of the 4x4 vehicle and place a wood block behind one of the rear tires. Loosen the lug nuts on the tire you need to remove one complete turn with a tire tool.
- 2). Lift up the vehicle with a floor jack and slide a jack stand underneath the axle next to the tire. Lower the vehicle so that it rests on the jack stand. Take the floor jack out from under the vehicle.
- 3). Unfasten the top and bottom bolts on the brake caliper with a socket wrench and slide the bolts out by hand. Take the brake caliper off the rotor and remove the brake pads from the caliper.
- 4). Suspend the brake caliper from the vehicle frame with a wire hanger to keep it out of the way. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake line.
- 5). Remove the cotter pin on the end of the axle with a pair of pliers and slide the crown washer off the axle. Unfasten the axle nut with a crescent wrench. Remove the screws that secure the rotor to the wheel hub with a screwdriver.
- 6). Take the rotor off the tire hub and remove the nuts on the back of the hub with a socket wrench and socket extension. Turn the steering wheel to give you room to get to the nuts on the back of the hub.
- 7). Pull the tire hub off the axle with a wheel hub puller. Remove the tire hub from the 4x4.
