How to Paint on Raw Muslin
- 1). Lay scrap newspaper in a large, open space. Hold the newspaper down with duct tape. Stretch the muslin on top of the newspaper and hold it down with duct tape. Make sure the lines of the fabric are straight, rather than skewed, so when the fabric is hung it does not look warped.
- 2). Seal the cloth's fibers by mixing equal parts of water with white latex paint in a bucket until the mixture is the consistency of milk.
- 3). Coat the muslin with the water and white latex paint mixture using a wide paintbrush. Let dry for 24 hours.
- 4). Apply flame retardant spray to the muslin to prevent it from catching on fire.
- 5). Attach background scenery stencils onto the muslin with temporary adhesive spray. This allows the stencils to stay in place while painting the cloth. Paint the stencils with acrylic spray paint. Hold the paint at least 1 foot away from the muslin and spray with a sweeping motion across the stencil for an even coat. Let dry for 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the stencil by carefully peeling back one corner at a time.
- 6). Coat the muslin with equal parts of water and white latex paint to seal the acrylic spray paint. Let dry for 24 hours.
- 7). Remove the duct tape from the muslin and scrap newspaper.
