This former royal palace has been re-dedicated to the visionary art of M.C. Escher.

The Hague Museum Night has become a yearly ritual for me, and no matter whom I'm with, the number-one request is to visit the crowd-favorite Escher in het Paleis (Escher in the Palace). True to its name, the museum is located in the former the winter palace of Queen Emma, later converted into office space for three of her successors (Queens Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix). The royal air hasn't dissipated from its rooms, which since 2002 have housed a permanent exhibit on the life and works of the Leeuwarden-born artist M.C.

Escher. With their clever subversion of space - a trait that often produces optical illusions - Escher's works have an enormous popular appeal, a fact that's reflected in the museum crowds; the permanent exhibit, "Eternity and Infinity", underscores the intrinsically philosophical nature of the artist's work. Beside the 150 prints on view, an extra attraction is suspended above the heads of visitors in each room: 15 chandeliers by artist Hans van Bentem are cast in the most unlikely shapes, from skulls to sea horses.
