What Is Grass Seed?

    Grass Seed for Your Lawn

    • The small-bladed, light-colored, golf course type of grass is more suitable for a shady yard. However, if the yard is sunny, a thicker and darker colored grass will be able to stand up to the heat efficiently. If your yard is a combination of shady and sunny patches, choose the type according to your individual taste. However, it is important to make sure that the lawn looks uniform and neat.

    Seasonal Sowing

    • Different varieties of grasses must be sown in different seasons. For example, Bermuda grass cannot tolerate low temperatures and grows well during summers, while Kentucky bluegrass grows quickly in cool and moist weather, so it should be planted in spring and autumn. If you live close to the sea, Saint Augustine grass will be a good option as it is able to tolerate the salt in the soil.

    Level of Activity

    • When choosing a grass seed variety for your lawn, consider whether the grass will be able to tolerate the amount of activity taking place in your lawn and garden. If your kids like to play in the lawn, then perennial rye grass or Bermuda grass would be a better choice. If you are a busy person and cannot water the grass regularly, prairie grass, bluegrass or buffalo grass will be able to handle the lack of water to some extent. Kentucky grass gives a neat and uniform appearance to the lawn, but will not be an ideal choice if you are not able to water it frequently as it is not very drought tolerant.

    Planting Grass Seed

    • Once you have decided which grass seed you want for your garden, fill your lawn area with good quality soil and add compost to it. Use a hoe, or hand or power cultivator to loosen about 2 to 3 inches of soil, and spread the seeds with the help of a spreader. Rake over the seeds to cover them with ¼ inch of dirt and cover the lawn with a thin layer of straw or hay. Use a sprinkler to water the grass daily. Try to keep the lawn moist but not soggy until the grass has established. A soggy lawn would result in washing away the grass seeds. Depending upon the variety of the grass seed, you will see your grass growing in 10 to 15 days.
