Making Grass Seed
- 1). Quit cutting your grass so the grass stalks can grow. The tall stalks hold the seeds.
- 2). Water your grass daily if no precipitation occurs. The ground should be damp but not soaked.
- 3). Look at your grass daily after about a week. Look for small flowers among the grass blades. After three weeks, you will have tall stalks heavy with tiny black seeds. Some seed stalks have a forked "V" shaped end.
- 4). Snip one stalk of seeds from the lawn. Tap the seeded end against your palm. If half of the seeds fall from the stalk, the grass is ready for harvesting.
- 5). Use hedge trimmers to trim the grass stalks down, leaving the grass about 6 inches tall. Collect the stalks and put them in a plastic storage bin.
- 6). Place the open container in a warm, sunny place. Place a lid on the container at night and when it rains. Dry the seeds in the container for three days.
- 7). Place the lid on the plastic container. Shake the container vigorously to remove the seeds from the stalks.
- 8). Pull out the empty stalks, giving them a good shake before removing them from the container. Use your fingers to loosen any stragglers from the stalk.
- 9). Collect the seeds and place them inside a glass or plastic container with a lid. Keep the container in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.
