Essential Convention Items

Going to a comic book convention is a fun and exciting thing for every fan. It is a place to meet creators, buy comics and other related goods, go to panels, network, and have a great time. You won't be as excited though, if you forget some essential con items. Here is a list of some essential things you will need to make your comic book convention trip a success.

1. Shoes

Four days, five if you count the preview night, and all the time walking around on concrete? Your shoes will be the biggest asset of the weekend. Don't bring cowboy boots, pumps, or flip flops as those won't support you for the time you'll need tracking down that comic, going to the many panels,or getting that autograph will be spent in pain. Your shoes should be top quality and broken in. The About.com guide to walking has some great suggestions for finding the right shoe.

2. Cash

Cash is king at the con. Sure, there are many ATMs and some retailers will be able to take credit/debit cards, but having cash is the best. It can in some instances get you a discount – if you're savvy about it. Be sure to keep it in a safe place and don't bring to much. This will help you in setting a self imposed budget for the con keeping you safe from overspending.

3. Backpack

If you are going to a convention, chances are you will spend money on some great product. Some vendors might have bags for their wares, but having a decent sized comfortable backpack will make a big difference. You're going to want your hands free to take pictures and get autographs.

4. Comics/Notebook

Bring something to sign! You can bring your favorite comics, but many creators have comics you can buy from them. You might also bring a notebook or sketchbook to get autographs and sketches. Having something handy can mean the difference between getting that sketch or being left in the dust.

5. Camera

There are many sights to see at a convention and you need to be sure that you can remember it, especially on those hazy nights at the local watering holes. Having a camera is a great thing to capture those amazing moments at the con. Be sure to bring something to put those pictures on, or have extra film or a storage device handy as you will want a way to take a picture at a moments notice.

6. Water

Stay hydrated. You're going to be moving around a lot and having a ton of fun, but in doing so will put you in a situation to lose a lot of water. Many conventions are in the summer, which can make water loss even worse. Bring a small bottle as there are many fountains and sinks to replenish your water supply.

7. Map

Having a map of the convention floor is the best way to keep your time organized. Knowing when and where things are will make your transitions from one event to the next much easier. It will also make it easy to locate your favorite artist, publisher, writer, celebrity, or other talent. Most cons post the map with the locations of talent and vendors on their website beforehand so be sure to download and print a copy. As an alternative, you can always get one a the door when you arrive.

8. Gameplan

Knowing who, what ,when, and where about the convention is a great way to make sure you get in everything you want to see. Again, most conventions post a schedule of events well before the event so be sure to peruse it and see what you want to see.

9. Deodorant/Toothbrush

Gamers, geeks, and fanboys often have a bad reputation when it comes to body odor. Be sure to shower, and wear plenty of deodorant. Let's change that conception of our culture by staying clean and fresh.

10. Friends

A convention is a very different thing if you have friends accompanying you. You can team up as to what panels you can see, and having a friend to shoot the breeze while you wait in line will make things go much quicker. Also, having a friend can be a great money saver, sharing a room, food, gas, and other expenses. You might also just find a friend at the convention as well.

11. Sharpie

This tool is a must have at the convention. Most talent will have one on hand, but it never hurts to be prepared. Having a Sharpie is the best way to be sure to get that autograph you've been hankering for. You might even want to bring a silver metallic one for those dark covers of comics.
