    • 1). Prepare the refrigerant canister and connector hose following the instructions included. Be sure all connections are tight. Locate the low-side service port. It may have a blue cap, but it is the one closest to the receiver/dryer canister. Unscrew the cap and attach the charging hose. Warm the engine to operating temperature and turn on the air conditioning. Set the controls to maximum cooling.

    • 2). Insert the thermometer into one of the dash vents near the center of the passenger compartment and note the temperature. Rather than absolute temperature, you measure the effectiveness of the system by the relative change in temperature. The ideal ambient temperature for working on the system is 75°F .

    • 3). Read the pressure on the inline gauge. If it is 24 or lower, the system needs additional refrigerant. If it is between 25-44 PSI, it has a normal charge and no additional freon should be added. If it is above 45, you have a serious problem that needs professional attention.

    • 4). Turn the refrigerant can upside down and open the valve until you hear the gas flowing. Monitor the gauge while approximately half of the can is put into the system. Close the valve and let it stabilize. Check the thermometer to see if you have achieved at least 15 degree reduction from the first reading. Let the system equalize and check the pressure again. If it is in the 25-44 PSI range, the system is fully charged. If it is still low, repeat the above procedure until the gauge is in the proper range.
