How to Install a Fence Section

9
    • 1). Mark the center point of the two posts on the fence section. Then measure the distance from one of the marks to the other. This distance represents the space from the center of one posthole to the other.

    • 2). Mark the ground for the posts according to the measurement taken in Step 1 with spray paint. Dig the holes at least 24 inches deep (for 8-foot posts) with a powered auger or posthole diggers. Keep the holes within 3 or 4 inches of diameter of the posts on the fence section.

    • 3). Drive the wood stakes in the ground with a sledgehammer. Keep them close enough to the holes to secure the 2-by-4 stud to it and the fence post. Set the posts of the fence section in the holes.

    • 4). Secure the studs to the stakes with the variable speed drill and one deck screw. Place the carpenter's level on the fence section vertically and adjust the fence until it is plumb. Then secure the stud to the fence posts with the variable speed drill and the deck screws.

    • 5). Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pour it into the posthole and use the shovel to make certain it surrounds the post. Refer to the concrete manufacturer for the amount of concrete needed for each post.
