Driving Anxiety - 5 Ways to Treat It

31
Driving anxiety is something that affects many people.
It can strike at any time, especially if you are driving over bridges or are surrounded by large trucks.
Driving anxiety can also affect your personal life as well because it might even force you to choose to stay at home rather than traveling to see family and friends.
If you're suffering from driving anxiety here are five tips to help you stop from suffering these attacks, or at least relieve some of the symptoms.
1.
Take a less busy road If at all possible avoid busy roads like freeways during rush hour.
These busy roads can make you feel trapped and forced to drive at speeds that you are not comfortable with.
2.
Listen to music It's best to listen to peaceful music and avoid listening to talk radio stations while you're driving.
Avoid any type of music that can increase your stress level.
3.
Focus on the road Many people find that just by focusing on the yellow line or white line that they can just decrease, or prevent an anxiety attack.
This is because you're just focusing on the next section of road and are not focused on what is coming up a mile away.
4.
Avoid caffeine Caffeine is one of the biggest causes of anxiety attacks.
If you know you are going to be driving soon, avoid drinking any caffeine at least a couple hours before.
5.
Eat a light meal Some people avoid eating before they drive because they know they will feel anxious.
But by not eating you are actually increasing your body's stress level.
If you're suffering from severe driving anxiety it might be best to ride in a carpool or take a bus to work.
Some people find it helpful to just learn how to drive comfortably around their neighborhoods again before trying to tackle busy freeways again.
