How to Remove & Replace a Complete Window

18
    • 1). Remove the old window. Start with the storm window from the inside. After this is finished, you can move outside to remove the storm window frame. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the frame. Once the screws are removed, you can tap the frame out of place and remove it. On the inside, remove the sash stop and parting strips. You want to remove everything except the inside window casing and outside trim.

    • 2). Test-fit the window. This is a good chance to see if you have the right size window. It will also give you a chance to determine how much work you will need to do to fit the window in place.

    • 3). Apply a caulk bead along the corners where the old window sat. Apply a weather stripping tape along the bottom of the sill. Then apply silicone caulk along the edges of the window stop where the new window will sit in place.

    • 4). Set the window in place. To do this, first fit the bottom in place and carefully tip the top of the window to where it needs to be.

    • 5). Make sure the frame is square and install shims. The shims should be placed on each side of the window.

    • 6). Screw the window into place. The screws should go through the manufacturer's predetermined holes, through the shims and into the jam. Use a utility knife to cut the shims to size.

    • 7). Fill any gaps inside with low expansion foam. Replace the sash stops inside by nailing them into place around the window.

    • 8). On the outside of the house, place a foam backing rod into place to create a watertight seal. Use caulk to fill in the remaining space.
