    Windows XP Home

    • 1). Open "Performance and Maintenance" from your control panel. Select "System" and choose "System Restore." Select "Create a Restore" point and follow the prompts to backup your system. This protects your registry in case you make an error. Click "Start" then "Run." Type "regedit.exe" (without quotations).

    • 2). Expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder. Click on "Software," and then click on "Microsoft." Click "Windows" then "Current Version."

    • 3). Select "Policies" then "System." Double-click on the file in the right part of the window. This opens it and allows you to view the string.

    • 4). Delete the term "DisableTaskManager" from the string. Be very careful not to delete anything else. Click on "Ok" and close the registry editor. The task manager is re-enabled.
