How to Send a Letter to Close Credit Cards
- 1). Find the contact information for your credit card by looking on your bill. The address you send the letter to should be on your statement, but you should also call the company and verify the address before you send the letter.
- 2). Write a letter in business format to the company requesting that your credit card account be closed. The letter should have the date on it. The wording should basically say, "I'm requesting that you close my credit card account number (insert account number). Please send me a letter of confirmation that this has been completed. If you have any questions, you can contact me at (insert phone number)." Include your address after the signature line.
- 3). Proofread the letter after you print it out, and double-check your account number. Then sign the letter.
- 4). Use certified mail to send the letter. This will let you know that the letter reached the company.
- 5). Call the credit card company in 60 days to verify the account has been closed.
- 6). Keep on file a copy of the letter and confirmation receipt from the post office until you are sure the account has been closed.
