How to Make a Wall Canvas for Kids
- 1). Decide what kind of surface out of which you want to create a wall canvas. Consider magnetic paint that allows your children to stick magnetized objects onto, or dry erase paint — the white surface is easily cleaned of dry erase markers. Or think about chalkboard paint; one layer of it transforms the wall into a giant chalkboard.
- 2). Prepare the wall you decided to paint by removing all pictures and furniture so that it is bare. Mix dish soap or wall cleanser with warm water in a five-gallon bucket. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and wash dirt and marks off the wall with a clean sponge.
- 3). Let the wall dry completely, for about 30 minutes. Tape off trim and ceiling lines, or use a level to mark out a rectangular shape on the wall that you will turn into the wall canvas, if you don’t want to paint the entire wall.
- 4). Cover the floor with a drop cloth.
- 5). Pour magnetic, dry erase or chalkboard paint into a paint tray. Apply the paint to the wall or rectangular area on the wall with a roller brush in “M”-shape strokes until the area is covered. Allow the paint to dry completely, about six hours.
- 6). Apply a second coat of paint to the wall and let it dry for another six hours. Repeat once more, if desired.
- 7). Remove the drop cloth and tape. Place magnetized objects, dry erase markers or chalk into a small plastic basket on the floor or on a small table near the painted area. Let your child express his creativity on his new wall canvas.
