How to Stage Magic
- 1). Arrange a meeting with the magician a few weeks before the show to discuss the act. Ask the magician what special modifications to the facilities he might need, what lighting should be used, and any other questions or concerns he may have. If he needs to install specialty equipment, arrange a time with him to come to the theater and do so.
- 2). Design and build any modifications that the magician may need in the space. This may be as simple as ensuring your trapdoor is properly maintained, or as complex as installing a specialized wiring rig in the catwalk. Have the magician on site to make sure that all modifications match the specifications agreed upon.
- 3). Stage a dress rehearsal and carefully go through the mechanics of each trick. Have people sitting at various places in the theater to see if there are any problems which may ruin the illusion. If there are problems with the mechanical devices, stop and adjust them. Create any marks the performers may need with spike tape.
- 4). Stage a final dress rehearsal to ensure there are no further problems. Make sure that all equipment has been maintained to the highest degree of quality. Once this is done, and if the magician has no further notes, you are ready to stage your show.
