How to Increase Your Virtual Memory Safely
- 1). Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click "System and Security" in Windows 7 or click "System and Maintenance" in Vista. Select "System."
- 2). Click "Advanced system settings" in the left-hand column.
- 3). Click the "Advanced" tab and click "Settings" in the "Performance" section. Click the "Advanced" tab in the window that opens and click the "Change" button under "Virtual memory."
- 4). Click to remove the check mark next to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives." Highlight the drive that you want to change. This is usually your "C" drive.
- 5). Click the radio button next to "Custom size." Enter the new minimum amount of virtual memory in the "Initial size" field. This amount should be 300 megabytes more than the amount of random access memory you have in your computer.
- 6). Enter the new maximum amount of virtual memory in the "Maximum size" field. This amount should be three times the amount of RAM you have in your computer. Click "Set" and "OK."
