How to Advocate for Solar Power in a Community

14
    • 1). Develop a solar power booth for a local Earth Day gathering. Start with a three panel poster detailing types of solar power. Display a variety of solar items such as solar-powered toys from Real Goods (see Resources), a solar-heated camp shower and solar cookers or ovens.

    • 2). Stock up on pamphlets from Solar Cookers or the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as catalogs from Real Goods, Lehmans and Solar Home (see Resources). Distribute these at the Earth Day gathering or any other public event.

    • 3). Organize solar instruction for local libraries and youth groups. For example, get plans from Solar Cooking Archive to build a simple solar cooker or a pizza box solar oven (see Resources). Cookies and pizza, cooked in the sun, make great demonstrations of solar power.

    • 4). Instruct local governments and businesses on how to purchase solar-powered commercial lights, pool heaters and other equipment. The Solar Electric Power Company manufactures commercial lights for locations far from the grid. Solar Buzz lists manufacturers by country (see Resources).
