14 Orphan News Cars that Could Make Good Used Cars
LeftLaneNews.com, which is staffed by some great automotive writers and photographers, has come out with a list of 14 cars that you won't be able to buy for 2013. It's an important list for the used car market because these models instantly drop in value.
These types of lists have been reported here in the past. They are what are termed as orphan cars - used cars that are no longer being produced. As I've said in the past, they can be great vehicles, especially if you drive your used cars into the ground and aren't as concerned about resale value.
Here's the 2013 orphan cars list, courtesy of LeftLaneNews.com's Andrew Ganz.
Acura RL
As Aaron Gold wrote in his Acura RL review, "The RL is the perfect step up for someone who has owned nothing but Honda Accords for the past twenty-five years, but for everyone else, the RL probably won't cut the mustard." My thought is it's a good, reliable luxury sedan that won't excite you but it will please you. Values should be especially good on RLs made before 2011.
Audi A4 Avant
Station wagons are always an iffy proposition. Only people who want them buy them. One rarely settles for a station wagon. In the market for a used station wagon? The Audi A4 is going to be a smart choice.
Dodge Caliber
There is no logical reason to buy a Caliber. Insanely, they were white hot when first introduced but quickly cooled off. Good thing. They were lousy cars. Aaron Gold was definitely wrong when he wrote in his review: "The Dodge Boys just may have another big hit on their hands."
Ford Crown Victoria
It's been off the consumer market for a few years, which was too bad because Crown Victoria" was a durable car.
You might be able to pick up a used one from a fleet but make sure you get a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
Hyundai Elantra Touring
Another wagon gets killed off and I think it's a shame. Hyundais are such good cars in the last five to 10 years that you might have trouble finding a good deal on a used Touring but it would be worth the search. It's a great wagon with so-so styling but what wagon owner is really going for flash when practicality is so much more important?
Infiniti G25
Put me down on the list of people (including About's Jason Fogelson) who don't see the need for an Infiniti G25. Skip this used car unless you somehow find one at say 20% below KBB value. Then, and only then, one might make sense.
Jeep Liberty
Frankly, I never liked the Jeep Liberty and can't recommend buying one used. Scratch it off your list.
Kia Sedona
Need a minivan for transportation reasons? You can't beat the Kia Sedona - the proverbial redheaded stepchild of minivans. It's low frills but also low price. It's a must consider for any bargain hunting family of five or more.
Lexus HS 250h
OK, normally I try to promote other About.com writers but Andrew Ganz from LeftLaneNews nails it with this statement: "How did this one seem like a good idea to Lexus?" Again, like others on the list, there is no reason to buy it. Much better hybrids exist on the used car market.
Mazda CX-7
Go ahead and buy the Mazda CX-7 on the used car market. Some didn't like its four-cylinder engine but it's fine for 99.9% of all driving situations. Take advantage of some misguided beliefs and pick yourself up a nice midsize crossover.
Mitsubishi Eclipse
Again, there are much better used cars on the market than the Mitsubishi Eclipse. What's especially concerning about buying this used car is there may not be a lot of Mitsubishi dealers around to service it in years to come.
Mercedes-Benz R-Class
You know, just because nobody liked something doesn't make it all bad. The R-Class was the Mercedes-Benz no self-respecting M-B owner wanted. However, if you're looking for luxury in a different package - you could do worse. Find a good price on a used Mercedes-Benz R-Class (geez that's a lot of hyphens for four words) and it's a worthwhile investment.
Maybach
Again, I turn to Mr. Ganz: "What's not to like about a car that costs more than a house but looked like a tastelessly modified 10-year-old Mercedes-Benz S-Class? The Maybach was highly sophisticated at its launch, but it grew outdated very quickly." There's no reason to buy one used. Spend the money on a new luxury car.
