How to Dry Land Trap a Raccoon

    • 1). Decide where to set the trap. Areas with a combination of timber and water are natural raccoon habitats, but they also frequently get into trash bins or other places with human waste. Look for trails that raccoons use on a regular basis.

    • 2). Place a live trap at the location you've scouted out. Open the door and affix it to the top of the trap. Live traps include a metal piece that's used to hold the trap door to the top. The door falls shut when a raccoon walks inside the trap and puts weight on the trap pan.

    • 3). Choose a bait with which to lure raccoons into the trap. Raccoons eat just about anything, but some of the most popular baits are marshmallows, sardines and wet cat food. Molasses can be good, too.

    • 4). Put the bait in the back of the trap, just behind the pan.

    • 5). Squeeze juice from your bait, if possible, and create a scent trail leading into the trap.
