What Kind of Solution to Use to Wipe-Off Exercise Machines
- Sanitizer sprays work well but typically you'd have to carry around a bottle and several towels to wipe the spray off with. An alternative is a non-wipe spray like SaniGuard Sanitizing Spray. It kills more than 99 percent of germs and does not need to be wiped off. It would still be a good idea to give a machine a quick wipe to mop up sweat before applying the spray with a towel you can reuse.
- Brands like WipesPlus make disinfecting wipes specifically for exercise equipment. They are convenient because they are portable and you can simply throw them away. You can use them on machine seats, handles, and pins for the weight stacks. Wipe off every part your body will touch before getting on the machine. You can even use these wipes for free weights like dumbbells and barbells.
- Although many cleansers will protect your skin from germs, what's to protect your skin from the toxic or irritating ingredients in the cleanser? Choosing a green, non-toxic cleanser will be better for your skin and the environment while still killing the germs that might be on exercise equipment. Simple Green makes a good non-toxic, biodegradable spray cleanser you can use. See the Resources section below for more information about potentially toxic or hazardous ingredients that are used in many of the products that come into contact with our skin on a daily basis.
