Check Out New York"s Most Historic Hilton Hotel

103
A classic hotel on the quieter side of New York's 42nd Street, Hilton Manhattan East, which opened in 1931, is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Built in the Tudor Revival style, the hotel consists of two towers of 17 and 20 stories that house a total of 300 rooms.

What makes the hotel particularly appealing to couples is that 13 of its rooms feature a balcony with views of the United Nations and East River or points south.

These full balconies, with a table and chairs, are extremely rare in Manhattan hotel rooms and an amenity worth requesting (and paying a bit more to attain).

Another of Hilton Manhattan East's unique features is its adjacency to the landmarked circa-1928 Tudor City co-ops (the hotel's original name was Hotel Tudor) and the 19th-century Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

There's no hustle and bustle in the unpretentious lobby. The hotel's bar/lounge aka Marketplace seems like a comfortable place to grab a quick snack and check emails, rather than a destination to bend an elbow and meet fellow travelers.

The hotel's small gym is augmented with separate saunas for men and women.

Rooms are comfortable and conservatively decorated. Italian marble bathrooms feature a tub/shower combination and vanity with a a magnifying makeup mirror. Some include a bidet. Doorbells lend a homey touch.

Local Landmarks
Lovers of architecture have a bounty of buildings to explore close to the hotel. At the far eastern end of 42nd Street, close to the East River, there's the iconic United Nations (760 United Nations Plaza at First Avenue), with its modern International Style buildings.

Guided tours are available and you can eat lunch in the Delegates' Dining Room (it's a price-fixe buffet).

The twelve-story Ford Foundation Headquarters building (320 East 43rd Street) is considered another classic of International Style modern architecture. It contains an interior garden within a greenhouse-like atrium that is open to the public during business hours.

Even Tudor City (First to Second avenues between 40th and 43rd streets) is worth a stroll; it contains two small public parks and a nice view of the UN and East River from the highest point of the escarpment overlooking First Avenue.

Continuing west, take time to visit the lobby of the 1930 Art-Deco Daily News Building at 220 East 42nd Street. Although the exterior is monumental, it's what's inside that counts: The world's largest indoor globe, and it rotates.

Two more buildings to check out before you reach Madison Avenue: The iconic Chrysler Building and Grand Central Terminal, with its magnificent star-studded ceiling. And should you be hungry after all that walking and gawking, there's a food court on the lower level as well as the famous (and delicious) Grand Central Oyster Bar.

Historic Package
Couples who want to learn more about this storied area can opt for the hotel's Historic Package, which includes breakfast, a walking tour, and tickets to a choice of two different museums.

Easy to Reach
This Hilton is very convenient to the rest of New York City by bus, and taxis are plentiful. Hilton Manhattan East Hotel's location is ideal for couples who want to be in midtown but also want to avoid crowds and Times Square tourist traps. You'll never see an Elmo in this part of town, but you may rub elbows with visitors to the United Nations and the Ford Foundation.

There's an eastbound bus stop right in front of the hotel and a westbound one directly across the street. Or catch an M15 downtown bus, which can take you to the Lower East Side, Chinatown, South Street, Wall Street, and South Ferry, where the famous Staten Island Ferry Terminal is located.
