  Batam is one of the biggest islands in the Riau archipelago, and is a 40-minute ferry ride from Singapore. This used to be a poor island, but according to the island's official website, it is now one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations, in terms of visitor numbers, in Indonesia. Since the 1990's, there has been extensive building, including a modern airport, ferry terminals, hotels and tourist attractions. The island enjoys a tropical climate, and the local culture is a blend of Malayan and Islamic.

• This holiday resort in Nongsa is divided into two wings, both set in beautiful gardens. The Riani Wing has traditional Balinese-style rooms with thatched roofs and private balconies.   This beach-front resort is just outside Waterfront City. There are 315 rooms, themed suites and cabanas, all with satellite TV, mini bar, private balcony, safe, tea and coffee-making facilities and air conditioning. Suites also have fully-equipped kitchens. The hotel has a swimming pool and children's pool, giant Jacuzzi, beach games area and water-sports facilities that include parasailing, banana boat and jet skis. Dining is at the Harris Cafe, which overlooks the pool, the H Grill and Bar, which offers al fresco dining in the evenings, and the Pizzeria, but 24-hour room service is available.
