How to Train Indoor Puppies
- 1). Start immediately. The sooner you begin, the easier time you will have with the training process. Begin developing behaviors in your puppies before they begin developing behaviors on their own.
- 2). Set aside a short period each day for training. Puppies have very short attention spans, so keep the training sessions under an hour, but try train at approximately the same time every day, establishing a routine.
- 3). Use very simple commands. To indicate a desired behavior, a single word or sound will suffice, such as "Sit," or "Stay."
- 4). Use constant repetition for each behavior you wish to establish. If potty training, constantly bring your puppy to the spot where she should relieve herself. If training her to sit on command, constantly coax her to the sitting position while shouting the "Sit" command. Puppies become accustomed to new behaviors through repetition. Remain patient and diligent.
- 5). Use positive reinforcement in every instance. When your puppy does something correctly, immediately offer treats and affection. When he fails to perform the correct behavior, remain patient and try again.
- 6). Maintain positive energy. Puppies respond very well to enthusiasm, so remain upbeat and make the training process fun and exciting for her.
