  Dark chocolate came from a drink created by the cultures of Central and South America from cacao seeds. This drink was very bitter so it was laced with vanilla, chili pepper and alcohol to change its taste. Over the centuries, sugar was mixed into it and in 1847 it was pressed into a hard solid edible piece of chocolate by Fry and Sons of England. This was the first piece of dark chocolate ever and is now one of the most popular sweets in the world today.
