Culture on Display at HCT Offices in Celebration of Heritage Day
On 26 September 2014, HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Mobile Unit teams showcased their cultural clothing and traditions in celebration of their diverse cultures and heritage day.
€The purpose of commemorating Heritage day at work was to allow the teams to learn and understand each other's cultures, to share the norms and beliefs, and to share facts and myths about HIV/AIDS that are known in our cultures. We also used this day for debriefing as the teams came together in one accord,€ said Courtney Marakalala, MBU; HCT Administrator.
Heritage Day encourages South Africans to come together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and the diversity of our country. Heritage Day is about proudly showing off one's culture through clothing, behaviour, attitude, language and food. It is about closing the cultural gap, learning different culture barriers and norms; and embracing the diversity of our rainbow nation.
In his words of welcome Brother Solly said; €we are here today to embrace different cultures and traditions. FPD allows us to celebrate Heritage Day so that we can learn, understand and embrace each other's cultures. In the past South Africans were isolated and divided by clans and cultures but in the age of democracy and the commemoration of Heritage Day we have been able to bridge the divide. Today multi-cultural relations are promoted to create a more informed society. We have to learn the tricks of life for every culture and their way of survival.
Brother Ditaba Malangeni from Capricorn District, Limpopo added: €It is the culture of FPD for employees to come together, to socialise, to learn from and about each other and to celebrate each other. This platform creates cultural diversity which is greatly needed in our country. Understanding each other's cultures and traditions can improve the way we communicate with each other.€
The day's activities where based on the services provided by the mobile unit teams. They were educational and Heritage based. The teams used cultural means to get the message out. The crowd chanted and ululated as everybody showed off their dance moves and their acting skills. All 7 mobile units were given an opportunity to participate in the day's event.
In conclusion Courtney said; €Our goal was to share the beautiful rainbow cultures we have as teams, to share the day together with our traditional dances, songs, poems and drama; and yet strengthening our relationship as colleagues (team building). This goal was definitely achieved as the teams were able to reflect back on their roots and relate to their daily work.€
