How to Paint Landcapes

Draw a quick sketch of your landscape idea with the pencil on the canvas or watercolor paper. Check that your horizon line is above or below the center line of the canvas. This will add more interest to the painting. Add features that will draw the eye into the painting and guide the eye to move through the composition. - 2

Dilute blue with a large amount of white and apply to area where you want to show the sky. Add white to indicate fluffy clouds. Use wide brushstrokes, smoothing and scrubbing the paint where needed. With oil paint or acrylic you can add thick layers of white for additional cloud texture using a palette knife. - 3). Paint your background colors where needed, adding as much detail as you desire. The feeling of a landscape can be conveyed by color placement rather than detail, if that is your preference. Thin washes of paint may be layered on to create the final effect.
- 4). Paint in the areas of your foreground. These may be areas of trees, perhaps wildlife, a stream or pond that help develop the depth of your painting. If you are unsure about how to create the shape of a landscape element, just give the essence of the shape and let the color add its own detail.
- 5). Sign your painting when you have added all the elements to your satisfaction.
