During a funeral, burial, memorial or visitation service, arrangements of flowers are often given to honor the deceased and express sympathy to his family. After the service has ended, the family members may take the arrangements home or leave them at the grave site. The traditional meanings of some flowers make them a popular choice for floral sympathy arrangements. - Lilies are commonly used in sympathy arrangements. Lilies are white and symbolize innocence, purity and majesty. These flowers are commonly used as a symbol of the innocence that is restored to the departed. Stargazer lilies represent sympathy.
- Carnations are commonly incorporated into a floral arrangement. The arrangements often include greenery and baby's breath between the varying colors of carnations. Different colors of carnations carry different meanings. Red carnations represent admiration. Pink carnations represent remembrance. White carnations, like lilies, represent innocence.
- Chrysanthemums (or "mums") are commonly used in funeral services. Sympathy mums are popular in some parts of Europe, Korea and Japan. The white mums represent death and grief. White mums in the United States also symbolize truth.
- Roses are among the most recognizable flowers and are often incorporated in sympathy arrangements. A white rose represents humility and innocence. Red roses represent respect, love and courage. Pink roses represent love and grace.
