How to Qualify For Verizon Heritage
- 1). To qualify, win the PGA Championship or U.S. Open prior to 1970 or in the last 10 years. Among those participating in the last Verizon Heritage Classic meeting the top criterion were Tiger Woods (of course), Jack Fleck, Ray Floyd and Bobby Nichols.
- 2). You can also qualify if you win the Players Championship. This is the second highest criterion applied in the selection process and is a much smaller field of invitees. In 2010, Stephen Ames, Sergio Garcia, Fred Funk and Henrik Stenson were invited from this category.
- 3). Alternatively, you can win a PGA-Tour co-sponsored or approved event. This is probably the most likely way for you to receive an invitation. Since there are many PGA-Tour sponsored events on the way to qualifying for the U.S. Open, you have more opportunities to receive an invitation. There were 54 invitees from this category in 2010.
- 4). You may also receive an invite if you finish among the top 125 on the previous year's PGA money list. This is much more difficult than qualifying by winning a PGA-sponsored event but there were 59 invitees in 2010. Although this ranks as the 19th criterion on the priority list, more golfers were invited in this category than any other.
- 5). Practice your golf game until you excel and develop a close connection with whomever becomes the title sponsor of the 2011 Heritage Classic. There are eight discretionary invitations and if you're good enough, you may be a lucky recipient. Better yet, become the title sponsor of the event to increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation.
