How to Get Glasses at the Eye Doctor's

    • 1). Contact your family eye doctor and set up an appointment for an eye exam. When scheduling your appointment, stress that you're having trouble with your vision and may be in need of corrective lenses. If your family does not already have an eye doctor, obtain the contact information of a local eye-care facility via the Internet or phonebook. It can also be helpful to ask friends who wear glasses where they go for eye-care -- a recommendation will help you avoid choosing the wrong eye doctor.

    • 2). Show up for the eye exam. Going to an eye exam for the first time can be a rather anxiety-producing experience -- but this can be alleviated by knowing what to expect. The exam will consist of a variety of different tests such as an eye muscle movement test -- during which you will be asked to track an object with your eyes, a cover test where the doctor will cover your eyes individually to test for movement, and a visual acuity test which is a standard eye chart "letter" test. In general, eye exams are painless and last for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. At the end, the doctor will determine whether or not you are in need of corrective lenses.

    • 3). Choose a pair of eyeglasses that best suits your style and body type. Eyeglasses can usually be purchased at the office where you get your eye exam. However, many people find that it is far more affordable to purchase eyeglasses on the Internet through a wholesale retailer. Choose frames that are within your budget and suitable to your lifestyle and facial structure.
