How to Find Air Leaks in a House
- 1). Turn off your furnace on a cold, windy day.
- 2). Extinguish any flames--such as those in fireplaces, furnaces or gas water heaters.
- 3). Shut all your windows and doors and the damper on your fireplace.
- 4). Turn on your bathroom, laundry room and kitchen vents, and any other vents that blow air outside.
- 5). Light a stick of incense.
- 6). Pass the lighted incense stick in front of areas that are likely to have a leak, such as doors frames, window frames, mail chutes, utility service entrances, phone lines, outdoor water faucets, dryer vents and air conditioners.
- 7). Watch the smoke from the incense stick. If the smoke is sucked out of the house or blown into the room the area has an air leak.
