The Recommended Thicknesses for Granite Pavers

19

    3/8-Inch

    • Pavers 3/8-inch thick are recommended for use with smaller tiles that are 12 inches square or smaller. The small pavers can handle the thin size more easily than larger pavers, because the larger pavers would break if they were this thin. This size of pavers is also recommended for use with mortar as a base because they do not require the high level of drainage that thicker and larger pavers require. Thin pavers also work best on a supporting slab, such as a cement base. The recommended installation technique is cement bed, waterproof board, mortar and finally the pavers on top of the mortar.

    1/2-Inch

    • An advantage of 1/2-inch granite pavers is that they have a flexible installation method. These pavers are recommended with a cement floor, dirt floor or with a sand bed under the pavers. They can be used with mortar or with sand alone. These pavers typically come in 12-inch square pavers, 16-inch square pavers, 18-inch square pavers or even 24-inch square pavers. The pavers typically do not come in sizes smaller than 12 inches square. The placement of the 1/2-inch thick pavers can be the same as for the 3/8ths-inch thick pavers, or they can be placed directly onto compact soil or placed on a bed of sand.

    3/4-Inch

    • The use of 3/4-inch thick granite pavers is recommended with a sand bed before installation. The recommended placement of 3/4-inch pavers is a 1- to 2-inch thick bed of sand under the pavers with sand poured between the cracks for stability. The 3/4-inch thick pavers come in 18-inch square, 24-inch square and 36-inch square sizes. Occasionally it is possible to find 3/4-inch thick pavers in 16- or 12-inch square sizes, although that is rare.

    1-Inch or Thicker

    • The largest size of pavers are typically 1-inch thick. The thickness ranges from 1 inch to 3 or 4 inches. These thicker pavers are usually used as one large slab, such as to make a patio or steps. The installation procedure for thick pavers is a 2- or 3-inch layer of gravel, a 2- or 3-inch layer of sand, with the pavers placed on top of the sand. Sand is used between the pavers for stability.
