A Review of The Lesbian Porn Series: Crash Pad

15

I’ve been perusing Crash Pad Series to find out what’s doin’ with this popular membership-based queer porn website. I thought it was solely lesbian porn, but in fact the series includes, as its blog states, “diverse genders and fluid sexualities soaking the camera in all manners of toys, kinks, and tricks.” Pink & White Productions, which produces the Crash Pad Series, boasts 12,000+ photos, 200 mobile-compatible video episodes and exclusive behind the scenes interviews.

Sounds really interesting, huh? There’s certainly something for everyone, which is great! The interesting cast of characters includes my particular faves, Brooklyn Flaco and Pappi Coxx, two fierce people of color brandishing some amazing ink and inimitable style. Both characters act under various guises and in myriad scenarios, as do all the performers. There’s also a new performer on the scene, Nic Switch, a seemingly innocent suburban white girl. In one Nic Switch/Brooklyn Flaca scene I thought was very hot, one that involved deep fisting as well as strap-on action, several elements were quite puzzling, most particularly Nic’s attire. I wasn’t sure whether her young soccer mom look was intentional or just extremely unfortunate.

Is Spitting Erotic?

A different scene, with characters I do not remember, began with one woman spitting repeatedly into the mouth of another, blindfolded, woman. As the scene progressed, the same spitter spat on the other woman’s pu**y. Not, at least to me, at all sexy.

It was too reminiscent of straight porn where the woman is submissive to a man, and not in a good, sex-positive way. Ladies, don’t you know that if you need to penetrate a tight vagina, there’s lube for that.
The premise of Crash Pad is that the viewer is a voyeur, along with the series director Shine Louise Houston herself. Shine plays the landlord of a venue referred to as the Crash Pad. She lends keys to the joint to those looking for a place to carry out their steamy interludes in exchange for the privilege of watching/filming them on her “VoyeurCam.”

The VoyeurCam

The VoyeurCam is a truly ingenious story device Shine employs. However, I must say it gives me the willies, based not on any sort if puritanical disapproval, but rather millennia of women and queers being watched, used and abused, in porn settings specifically.
Crash Pad is part of the brave new world of feminist/dyke porn where it’s all good to do (and show) anything and everything as long as everyone is a consenting adult. No argument there.

But, my analysis (and willies!) reference previous incarnations of porn where women were also supposedly in charge. Linda Lovelace, Marilyn Chambers and Georgina Spelvin, the “adult actresses” of the 1970s who helped make hardcore porn acceptable to mainstream audiences, were seen as independent, in-control, sexually self-realizing individuals possessing all the power in their porn scenes (and in life). Some of these women—along with other adult stars—later said that not only were not decently compensated for their work, they were not even voluntary participants. There was much controversy around the revelations of these women who found themselves caught in the crosshairs of a debate between Women Against Pornography, a group that wanted to put a face on their anti-porn message, and “pro-sex” feminists striving to advance female sexual agency.

I completely respect the queer and feminist women who are making strides to change the face of porn to a friendlier environment of for all concerned. I hope that more women and queers involved as creators of porn will revolutionize what has always been seen as a dirty business.
