The Best Times to Hunt Deer

32

    Dawn

    • The earliest hours of the morning are among the highest for deer movement. It's best to get to your blind or your station before dawn. Set up when it's still dark and you won't disturb the deer as they wake up in the morning. Right around dawn is when the deer begin leaving their beds and moving to feeding areas. If you pick a spot near a feeding area, near a pasture or meadow where the deer bed down, or at a trail between the two, early-morning traffic should give you a good opportunity at a shot. The morning rush usually lasts for an hour or two after sunrise.

    Dusk

    • Dusk is the best time for deer hunting. First of all, hunters at dusk will have the converse advantage that dawn hunters had, as deer return to their beds. However, dusk is also a time of other increased activity. In the warmth of early autumn, depending on the climate, the deer prefer coming out to feed at dusk rather than through the heat of the day. In late autumn, when most hunters hunt, deer are liable to be more active at dusk because of the rut. Bucks will be chasing does, and both will be less cautious than usual, and more likely to wind up in the wide open in good position for a shot. Get out to your position two hours before sunset and wait for the increased activity.

    Time

    • There are certainly some times of day that have advantage over others, but the fact is that deer are successfully hunted in every hour of daylight: morning, noon and evening. The best way to be sure you're out for the proper time is to spend as much time as you can out hunting. If you have the stamina, spend the entire day hunting, from dawn to dusk. If you don't have the patience or freedom to devote a full day to the hunt, stretch your hunting hours as much as possible. If you usually go out at dawn and again after lunch, try stretching the morning hunt for an extra hour, and cutting your lunch short to get back out for the afternoon. The more time you spend hunting, the more chance you'll have of bagging a deer.
