9
Women have suffered timeless misery and dejection under various forms of betrayal and abuse in the hands of the strong and mighty.
To add insult to injury, their plight sometimes occurs to them under the guise of comfort and solace.
Let us take the case of the infamous mail order brides as an example.
While their popularity was more apparent at the time the internet was made more accessible to the public, international marriage market have already been extant since the 18th century.
Primarily, the main parties to the transaction are the searcher grooms, the searched brides and the broker or intermediary, which may be a natural person or an agency.
Generally, the prospective grooms and brides are from different countries all over the world.
Usually, most males are Americans while the females come from former Soviet Union States, Central and Latin America, Africa, Asia and other less developed countries.
Here, the broker paves the way for the male and female to get acquainted.
The most common method is through a dating or matchmaking website owned by the broker.
The site contains a portfolio or "catalogue" of women who register themselves in the website.
Their personal and contact information will then be made available to male customers for "orders", of course, in exchange for a fixed sum of money.
The major reason attributed to why women risk entering into such transactions is usually financial necessity.
With the mail order bride system, they found a way to circumvent the immigration laws.
By marrying an American, they can get somebody to sponsor them into having immigration or work visas or procuring permanent residence.
Of course, they need not really stay in the relationship once already there.
Another reason would simply be the scarcity of available males in their places of origin.
For the men, while some do seek genuine companionship, others really are just there to satisfy their perverse intentions.
Of course, there are on very rare occasions successful matches, so to speak.
But for most women, it is just another hell they have gotten themselves into.
There have been various reports of physical and sexual abuse of the wives that have led to occasional deaths.
On the other hand, men themselves have become victims of unscrupulous women who are only obviously after their money.
Or, it could happen that the brokers or intermediaries are the ones guilty of fraud and misrepresentation.
In any case, because of these instances, some countries like the Philippines and the United States have become very vigilant in protecting their citizens by enacting safeguard measures against mail order bride abuses.
Apart from the existing immigration laws, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act No.
6955 or the Anti-Mail Order Bride Law in 1990; subsequently, in 2006, the United States Congress similarly enacted House Resolution 3402: The Violence Against Women and the Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005.
